Cut my finger by accident and now its black and blue?

i was messing around in the kitchen with my boyfriend. he tried to take the knife away from me playfully and sliced my pointer finger, near the top of my finger open. it bled quite a bit which i expected but it turned bluish, purply. can anyone please explain to me what that means.
